Escher House was formed in May 2014 through the merger of Renaissance and O'Keeffe Houses, which shared one building on North Campus. Together, they are referred to as "Escher House." A free 10-minute bus ride from U-M's Central Campus, this house is divided into nine suites of 16 to 20 people, each with a TV lounge, kitchen, four showers, and four toilet rooms. These arrangements facilitate social interactions and make the house feel smaller than it really is. The building, in fact, was designed by a former ICC co-oper and opened in 1970.
Escher House on UM's North Campus is the only building in the region designed and built to be cooperative housing. Most Escher house members are graduate students, although we have a substantial number of undergraduates, professionals who work in the area, and sometimes local artists, etc. We have a quiet, woodsy setting next to University of Michigan's North Campus, home of the Engineering, Music, and Art & Architecture schools, where many of our members are students. Escher House offers a dedicated, redundant, gigabit symmetric fiber connection to Merit Network that provides low latency, direct access to global research and education network backbones and cloud resources. There is a free University of Michigan bus that goes to Central Campus every 10 minutes on class days, and about half as often on weekends. There is also a nearby city bus that runs past the hospital and into downtown Ann Arbor.
